■ National DSA Call on Green New Deal
National DSA Call on Green New Deal
February 3, 2019 @ 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm
DSA National Ecosocialist Working Group is having a national call to discuss the ecosocialist work DSA chapters are doing across the country and to involve members in our national discussion about the Green New Deal. We're creating a Green New Deal platform and want to make sure it aligns with the values and campaigns other DSAers are working on or want to work on. The platform is meant to ensure that any national Green New Deal is centered on radical restructuring driven by excluded groups and pushing concrete demands for energy democratization and de-commodification, jobs guarantees, public banking, and single-payer healthcare. If these are things you dig, join the call to help finalize our platform and discuss a strategy to win it!

■ Socialist Night School: Marxism 101
Socialist Night School: Marxism 101
February 13, 2019 @ 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm
Cepeda Branch, Austin Public Library, 651 N Pleasant Valley Rd, Austin, TX 78702, USA
https://www.facebook.com/events/2278378045734242/?active_tab=about
Socialist Night School is an approachable and participatory place for DSA members to come learn about about democratic socialist perspectives, history, theory, and praxis. This program is intended for people with all levels of knowledge. Whether you’ve read every word of Marx front-to-back, or if you’re a little shaky on what exactly we mean by “socialism,” Socialist Night School is for you. Socialist Night School is largely discussion-based and entirely non-judgmental. There are no right or wrong answers, no quizzes or tests, and no bad questions.
This month's Socialist Night School will be about Marxism. The figure of Karl Marx looms large over socialism. More than perhaps any other figure in history, Marx is associated with the socialist tradition and socialists throughout history have looked to Marx for guidance and a framework for their politics. But Marx wrote a ton of stuff (and contradicted himself all the time), and his writings can be very unapproachable for contemporary readers. Moreover, the followers of Marx, over the last century and a half, have disagreed with each other frequently, and it can be really tricky to figure out what exactly people mean by “Marxism.” At this edition of Socialist Night School we’ll try to present an introduction to Marxism so that people can have a solid footing to make sense of the various different types of politics that fit under the umbrella of Marxism.
